Welcome to Piano with Nate! šŸŽ¹

If you want to sit down at the piano and play real songs with confidence, you’re in the right place.

The lessons here focus on a chord-based, song-first approach that helps you play real music without relying on sheet music

I’ve taught thousands of adults, many starting later in life, how to confidently accompany themselves and others using a clear, step-by-step chord approach.

Here you’ll:
- Learn songs quickly using chords (the authentic music language of pop, rock, folk, and country music)
- Make simple progressions sound musical
- Build confidence at the piano without overwhelm

šŸ‘‰ Visit my website below for structured piano courses and a growing library of songs.

I’m glad you’re here.

Piano with Nate

I just released a brand new FREE beginner piano course!

It’s called Ready to Play: A Chord-Based Beginner Piano Course, and it’s designed to help you start playing real songs as quickly as possible.

If you’ve always wanted to learn piano (or you’ve mostly learned through sheet music), this course shows you how chord-based playing actually works in pop and rock music.

Instead of focusing on reading every note, you’ll learn the skills musicians use to accompany songs, follow chord charts, and start making real music at the piano.

Inside the course you’ll learn:

• The essential piano basics to feel comfortable at the keys
• Four foundational chords used in countless pop & rock songs
• Simple rhythm patterns for playing with both hands
• How to build chords and read chord charts
• How to start figuring out songs on your own

There are also guided play-along videos with backing tracks so you can practice switching chords and playing in time with a real band.

You’ll also get a printable workbook with all the key ideas, charts, and exercises.

By the end, you’ll have the skills to look up the chords to songs you love and start playing them yourself.

And just to be clear…
Ready to Play is completely FREE.

We did it! 100k subs, and YouTube sent this cool plaque šŸ™ƒ

In April of 2020, I went for a long walk in the snow. It was unseasonably cold in Ithaca, NY, where I was spending the early days of quarantine at my parents’ house. I had been lucky enough to get out of NYC, where I had recently opened up a brick-and-mortar music school for kids (not the best timing). The future felt completely uncertain.

As I walked down an empty road surrounded by pine trees, I thought about the extra time I now had on my hands, and I suddenly had the idea to start a piano tutorial YouTube channel. I didn’t know what that would be like, or where it could take me, but I felt lit up with excitement. I had no idea how much that simple idea would change my life.

There were many little milestones along the way, from getting more comfortable on camera to having a video get just enough traction to keep me motivated to continue. As it grew, so did my dedication, and after a few years I decided to make it my full-time life’s focus.

Every single one of you has made this journey amazing. The comments, the messages, the questions that push me to be a better teacher - THANK YOU! ā¤ļø

I love the work I do. I love getting to engage with new songs every week, and I feel incredibly lucky I get to make my living through music (even if it looks different than my teenage dreams of being a rock star). When I read your comments and messages, and zoom out and realize that I am helping people all around the world connect - or reconnect - with the joy of playing piano, I am filled with gratitude. I am so thankful for all of you.

Let’s keep growing this amazing piano community together!

Thank you x 100,000

Hey everyone,

Popping in to say hello from Japan! And to acknowledge the gap in posting šŸ™ƒ

I thought some of you would appreciate this vinyl listening bar in Tokyo playing great hits from the ’60s and ’70s. While I was there, they played about 5 songs I’ve already done tutorial videos for, and I got a few ideas for new ones! These guys loved The Beatles.

Speaking of the Beatles: that John Lennon tutorial I hinted at turned out to be a much bigger project than I expected: it will be my first song tutorial clocking in at over an hour! But it will be out on June 1, and I think it will be worth the wait ā—”Ģˆ

I hope everyone is having a wonderful start to summer!

It’s amazing how memories can linger in the strings of an old piano.

This week, my siblings and I are back in Ithaca, NY, helping my parents get ready to sell our childhood home. It’s definitely bittersweet, but I’m grateful to be here, surrounded by family, getting the chance to say goodbye in person.

One of the special parts of this visit has been reconnecting with the piano I first learned to play on. There’s something about the way its old wood vibrates that brings back *layers* of memories. Honestly, it’s not a great piano—it doesn’t hold tune well, and the keys are a bit quirky and uneven. I’ve got a much ā€œbetterā€ piano back in Oregon, and it just doesn’t make sense to ship this one across the country. But still... I love this thing.

To say farewell, I’ve been spending some quality time practicing on it for a tutorial video I’ve been meaning to make forever. It’s a song I’ve had *tons* of requests for, and funnily enough, it was one of the first tunes I ever played on this piano (a very simplified version back then!). I think sometimes I procrastinate making videos for songs I really care about because I want to get them *just right.* But it’s finally happening, and the video should be up in about two weeks—hint: it’s John Lennon.

Since I’m away this week, there’s no new tutorial coming out today, but I'll be back to my regular schedule next week ā—”Ģˆ

It's getting to be that time of year! Start practicing the festive tunes you want to play around the fire next month. Here's a playlist of my Christmas/holiday tutorials from years past:

I’m so excited to finally share this...

After months of work, the Piano with Nate song library is LIVE
www.pianowithnate.com/all-songs

Here, in one convenient location, you can quickly and easily browse all the songs I’ve ever taught on YouTube. The lesson videos and chords/lyrics charts are there together in one place!

You can also search specific songs, artists, or filter by categories like decade, Christmas/holiday (good time of year for that!), etc.

I’ve even been using it myself - it’s super handy to pull it up on your phone for impromptu jams with friends and family.

Enjoy!

Friends, I am curious about something.

You like to play piano and learn songs…

Do you consider yourself a *musician*?

IF NOT, what would it take to be a ā€œreal musicianā€? Who are these ā€œreal musiciansā€?

I have thoughts on this, but I’d love to know what people are feeling.

Hope everyone is doing well! Spring is giving way to summer and I’ve got lots of fun song tutorials, as well as some other exciting things in the works.

Cheers!
