So, I am Just A Guy that is a big believer in the Linux community. I am NO expert. I am a user. I do work in the tech industry but not as a tech expert.

The question is why would someone who is not a network engineer, not a coder and generally unqualified start a channel about different Linux distros, installation and reviews.

I think there are people like me that just don't know where to start or have the confidence to try something new. After all, people complain about how their system crashes but very few will try something completely different.

Years ago, I was tired of the slow responsiveness of my PC and the 3 crashes per day when I decided to try Linux Mint.

Holy crap!! It was like having a new PC. Very quick. Very snappy and devoid of crashes.

If I can switch, you can too. Try it. You might like it.

Thanks for stopping by.

New Butterbian ISOs are out 🧈

Both editions updated today:
• butterknife 0.2.7 — the pick-your-own-WM TUI installer
• Butterbian XFCE 0.3.2 — the full XFCE desktop

What's new:
• Butterbian XFCE now installs on legacy BIOS machines, not just UEFI
— straight from a Codeberg bug report.
• The GRUB snapshot list now refreshes after every apt install/upgrade, not just when a new kernel rolls through. Your most recent Timeshift snapshots are always there to roll back to from the boot menu.

Plus the usual under-the-hood fixes.

Download (both editions): get.butterbian.org/

Release notes:
XFCE → codeberg.org/justaguylinux/Butterbian-XFCE/release…
butterknife → codeberg.org/justaguylinux/butterknife/releases

Hit a bug? Open an issue on Codeberg or stop by the forum. This round came straight from your reports — thanks for testing 🙏

New Butterbian ISOs went out today, timed with the Debian 13.5 release.

XFCE 0.3.0 — Firefox is now hardened on first boot (uBlock bundled, strict tracking protection, telemetry off). Everything's still flippable in about:config if you hate one of my choices.

butterknife 0.2.0 — snapshot stack cleanup, Timeshift handles retention now.

Same Butterbian deal either way: BTRFS + Timeshift + grub-btrfs configured from day one, so when an update eats your system you can reboot into a pre-update snapshot from GRUB.

No pod tonight. I guess I will stream and check some stuff out. Last second decision. Sorry in advance.

butterknife 0.1.6 is out — and it fixes an ownership bug that affected every install before this one. The installer was placing system files with user ownership instead of root. Breaks things like nix-daemon and isn't a great state to leave a system in.

Grab the new ISO at get.butterbian.org/, and if you're running an
older install, there's a short recovery script in the release notes:

Thanks to Ddubs for catching it.

Funny. I never noticed the mirror of my logo looks like a "b" for Butterbian. For those that did not know about the last video on Butterbian XFCE, it has more than 7k views (thanks) and HUNDREDS of Downloads (again thanks!!).

Fantastic comment on the video to make me aware of the potential logo. Thanks!!

Sorry to be that guy (just a guy), but:

Codeberg has been under a DDoS attack for hours. The team worked through the night and stabilized things enough to get some sleep - they'll be back at it in the morning. I've been supporting, praising and recommending Codeberg for a while now, and situations like this remind me why - a small team running on community donations, fighting to keep FOSS infrastructure alive.

If you rely on Codeberg, consider donating. I will be adding to my donation tonight.

I’ve never really built my own community space before.

I’ve mostly just hung around Matt’s The Linux Cast Discord.

But I wanted to try building something of my own.

So I set up:

• A simple landing page
• The Lab (Discourse forum)
• The Lounge (Matrix chat)

Everything’s here:

If you want to talk Linux setups, break Debian creatively, or just hang out — come by.

Unless I decide I hate running a community… then we’ll pretend this never happened.

I am going to do some testing via live streaming in about 10 minutes. Bunch of stuff. Including buttertodo. Geany. Anything goes.

I had separate repos for keeping Helium browser and Zen browser up to date. Then Neovim v0.11.6 dropped today, and my first instinct was "great, time to make a third repo!"

Then my brain actually kicked in.

Why maintain three separate repos when one can handle all of them?
Revolutionary thinking, I know.

So butterrepo is now my single solution for staying current with Helium browser, Zen browser, and Neovim. One repo, three tools, and room to add more later without creating yet another repo.
