March is Myeloma Awareness Month đź’š

But awareness isn’t just about wearing a ribbon — it’s about understanding the disease.

Did you know that multiple myeloma is not one single disease? There are different subtypes, based on the type of abnormal protein your myeloma cells produce and specific genetic features. These differences can influence how the disease behaves and how it’s monitored .

In this HealthTree video, we break down the different subtypes of multiple myeloma in clear, patient-friendly language — so you can better understand your diagnosis and have more informed conversations with your healthcare team.
If you or a loved one is living with myeloma, this is foundational knowledge. And if you’re part of this community, sharing education is one powerful way we raise awareness.

đź’š Take a few minutes to watch.
đź’š Share it with someone who needs it.
💚 Let’s make awareness meaningful.

Today is the first day of Myeloma Awareness Month 💚 — a time to learn, share, and empower.

This morning I rewatched a classic HealthTree University lesson where Dr. Morie Gertz explains multiple myeloma using a simple but powerful analogy: a garden.
If you’ve watched it before, it’s worth a rewatch. And if you haven’t seen it yet, I encourage you to take a few minutes to do so. Education is one of our strongest tools this awareness month. 💚

For years, “cure” was never mentioned in myeloma.

Now, the International Myeloma Society has proposed a definition of what cure could mean.

Proposed Definition of Cure

-Patient could be NDMM or RRMM
-Patient is sustained CR by standard criteria
-MRD negative at the sensativity of 1 in 1,000,000 cells by either NGS or NGF
-MRD negativity sustained for 5 years WITHOUT any therapy (irrespective of length of previous sustained MRD negativity on therapy)
-There should be at least 4 MRD assessments in 5 years , last one being at 5 years, all negative and no positive in between, if oerformed
-Negative by functional imaging (PET/CT or DWI WB MRI) - at least at the beginning of 5 year period and at the end of 5 year period with no intervening positivity

💬 Based on that definition — is myeloma a curable malignancy?

The International Myeloma Society (IMS) — a global professional organization dedicated to advancing research, education, and clinical care in multiple myeloma — met this past Friday and Saturday with one extraordinary goal: to define what “cure” will mean in myeloma.

After thoughtful discussion and expert consensus, they agreed upon a formal definition.

Let that sink in.

For those of us in the myeloma community, this is monumental. When I was diagnosed in 2008, “cure” was a four-letter word that was never spoken. It wasn’t part of the conversation. It wasn’t part of the expectations.

Today, not only is the word being spoken — it is being defined.

This marks a powerful shift in mindset, research focus, and possibility for patients everywhere.

Thank you to the entire myeloma community — the researchers who pushed the science forward, the clinicians who translated discovery into care, the organizations that funded lifesaving trials, and most importantly, the patients who enrolled in clinical trials and never gave up.

Because of you, we are no longer just treating myeloma.

We are defining cure.
