I used to put too much emotional weight on each painting.

Now I try to see every piece as one page in a much larger sketchbook.

Some pages matter more later than they do today.

I’ve learned more from returning to the same subject than constantly searching for a better one.

- Same location.
- Same trees.
- Same lake.

Eventually the subject starts teaching you things you missed the first time.

I knew this may not be the most interesting painting when I was painting it on location. But I wanted to document the changes of the lake and water levels of Folsom Lake, CA. It was morning and the light was so bright reflecting off the surface of the water. It almost looks like I painted snow or something. But all that you can see of the trees is the very tops of them, sticking out of the water. I had to paint them from much farther away due to the water level. The 2nd painting is just to show what the trees normally look like when the water level is lower.

My main advice for painting:
- don’t neglect the fundamentals
- make sure your painting has only 1 idea
- always have faith in the process

I don’t think I’ll ever stop making art.
- It brings meaning and purpose to my life.
- It teaches me patience every day.
- I constantly explore my curiosity.
- And I get to spend time in nature doing what I love.
The positives heavily outweigh any negatives of making art.

The word “talent” annoys me. It makes it seem like I didn’t have to work hard to create the art I make. Like I was born and able to make art no problem, with no effort. But it’s just not true.

It’s easy to lose yourself if your focus is to become popular. We do things for attention rather creating from the heart.

I have no choice but to make art. I didn’t choose it. It chose me.

The acceptance of imperfection is one of the best things you can have as an artist.

Nature is what pushes me to keep creating. Going outside and seeing the trees, feeling the breeze, and breathing in the fresh air. Seeing the light and shadows creating an interesting design. There’s nothing better than nature and having fun creating a piece of art from what you’re seeing and experiencing.
