The German Type VIIC submarine U-1021 lies off the North Cornish coast in just over 50 metres.

The story of how it was lured into a deep minefield in the dying days of WW2 is well known and covered in my video of this dive - https://youtu.be/TtCluUD9wfA

Later on this week, subject to weather, I hope to dive an unknown submarine lying in 70 metres off the Devon coast. Discovered a few weeks ago by Skindeeper & Portland Gas Shack we hope to gather further details that may allow it to be identfiied!

The largest ship sunk around the British Isles during the First World War went down on this day in 1918 - https://youtu.be/7kEZKpj3srA

Justicia was a truly enormous ship. At more than 740 feet long and 32,234 gross tons, she was even larger than Lusitania.

She was built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, the same yard that built Titanic, and had originally been intended to enter service with the Holland America Line as Statendam.

The First World War changed everything and she was eventually completed as the troopship Justicia.

On 19 July 1918, while sailing from Belfast to New York, she was attacked by the German submarine UB 64. Despite being hit several times, she somehow remained afloat and was taken under tow.

The following day, UB 124 found the badly damaged ship and attacked again. Justicia finally rolled onto her side and sank on 20 July 1918.

Her wreck now lies off Malin Head in around 70 metres of water. Much of it has collapsed, but the huge boilers, engines and bow still give you a real sense of just how big she was.

Justicia remains the largest First World War shipwreck around the British Isles and one of the most impressive liner wrecks a diver can visit. I've had the great privilege of diving it on five separate occasions!

Every single time these strobes appear in one of my videos, I get questions!

Are they bright - YES, I've compared them against all the major brands

Do they last long - YES, I've had them for 30 months (small fat one) and 18 months (thin one) respectively.

What is the max depth on them - I've had them to 100+ metres on lots of occasions

Are they expensive - NO! Well at least not compared to the major brands

Do I love them - YES YES YES 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎

Which one do I prefer - Thin one (4000 lumen) with through case recharging and simple button operation

Missing my usual Sunday evening post? You might enjoy this video, which I released just over 12 months ag.

Many people had searched for HMS Jason over the years, but Kevin Heath from Lost In Waters Deep, working with Bob Anderson aboard MV Clasina, had identified a very promising target. They called in the Gasperados Dive Team and I was very fortunate to be invited!

With only a short diving window, we dashed(!) up to Scotland and it turned out to be a fabulous result.

The SS Nemesis vanished off the coast of New South Wales on 9 July 1904.

She had left Newcastle bound for Melbourne with a cargo of coal and coke when she ran into a violent storm. All 32 men on board were lost. Wreckage and bodies later washed ashore at Cronulla, but the ship herself was never found.

For 120 years, her final resting place remained a mystery.

Then an unknown wreck was discovered in deep water off Port Kembla, later confirmed as the long lost SS Nemesis. She was sitting upright on the seabed in around 160 metres.

Rus talks through the discovery, the identification, and what it was like to finally see a wreck that had been missing for more than a century. But the dive also took a very serious turn when he suffered an extremely rare double cell failure and had to use his bailout rebreather.

It is a brilliant reminder of both sides of deep wreck diving. The incredible privilege of visiting places that have been lost for generations, and the unforgiving reality of doing it at depths where small failures can become very serious very quickly.
