This post is not the norm, so bear with me...
I am a restaurant manager in the Tampa Bay area here in Florida. Earlier this week, Shawn (one of our employees) was the victim of a hit-and-run pedestrian accident while walking to work. The driver fled the scene and did not stop or get out to check to see if Shawn was okay. He contacted the police to file a report, but they have not been able to track down the car/driver in this crime.
Shawn still reported to work that morning to fulfill his opening duties, despite suffering injuries. He contacted me after he opened the restaurant. I went in to relieve him and drove him to the hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a hip contusion, back sprain, and head injuries. He was advised to take 3 - 6 weeks minimum recovery time, which is very challenging as Shawn not only supports himself, but helps family members financially.
The initial hospital bill totaled over $8,600 and that does not include ongoing or future medical care. Shawn unfortunately doesn't have health insurance and was not anticipating this emergency that was not his fault.
We are hoping to raise at least $5,000 for Shawn to help defray his hospital bill and medical expenses, which are quite daunting. The hospital is not-for-profit and does offer a substantial discount if the bill is paid for in cash (even more if it's within 30 days), and I'm also going to assist him in applying for financial aid.
