Adam Finer - Learn BI

Adam Finer - LearnBI is a channel dedicated to demystifying and democratising Business Intelligence for beginners and beyond. We look at things like data analysis, data visualisation as well as business intelligence platforms and tools.

We're here to show you that you don't need to be a data scientist or have a big budget to get started with basic BI for any business, big or small. All you need are a few simple tools, techniques and concepts that we'll be featuring and teaching you all about.

Be sure to comment and say hello and let me know if you have any ideas for videos and content you'd like to see.

🚨 New video is live.

It’s the first in a short series about the parts of Business Intelligence that don’t always get enough attention.

Not SQL syntax.
Not dashboard buttons.
Not which tool is ā€œbestā€.

This one is about what happens when the work becomes real: when someone questions a number, when a stakeholder asks for something unclear, when a dashboard technically works but still doesn’t help anyone make a decision.

That side of BI is harder to teach, but it matters.

I’ve scheduled a free webinar as a YouTube Premiere today:

The Real AI Opportunity for BI Professionals

If you’re confused about how exactly AI fits into Business Intelligence work, you’re not alone.

There is a lot of noise around AI tools, prompts and built-in dashboard features. In this webinar, I explain where I think the real opportunity is for BI professionals, and why it is bigger than simply adding AI features to dashboards.

I’ll be in the live chat while it premieres, so feel free to join and ask questions as it plays.

I'll be honest, my last video has done terribly in terms of views because I think the algorithm doesn't know what to do with it.

A recent poll I did also suggests that most of you aren't even being served my latest videos at all.

It's really frustrating considering the time that goes into making them but it is what it is.

Perhaps if I share it as a post, it will reach more people. Give it a watch, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Adam

šŸ• I’ve made the full Ben’s Pizzeria SQL Project free šŸ•

This has always been one of the most popular beginner SQL projects on Learn BI Academy, so I’ve decided to make it available as a free mini-course.

Inside the project, you’ll work with a realistic pizza restaurant dataset and use SQL to answer business questions, just like you would in a BI analyst role.

It’s a simple, practical way to start connecting SQL with real business analysis rather than just practising random queries.

You can access the free project here:

If you’ve been meaning to practise SQL with a proper guided project, this is a good place to start.

I’ve just finished rebuilding both of my websites šŸŽ‰

The Learn BI Academy site and the Learn BI Online blog have both had a complete refresh, and I’m really happy with how they’ve turned out.

If you have a minute, I’d love you to take a look:

I’ve put together a free 21-minute webinar called The Real AI Opportunity for BI Professionals.

It’s about why AI in BI is about more than prompts, dashboards and built-in tool features, and where I think the real opportunity is for people working with data and Business Intelligence.

You can watch it here:

Quick question: have my last few videos been appearing in your YouTube feed?

I’ve posted a few new videos recently, including some around AI, BI systems and marketing reporting, and I’m trying to understand whether they’re actually being shown to regular viewers.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

I didn’t have kids when I started this channel. Now I’ve got two daughters, and they’ve completely changed my life.

It’s tiring, chaotic, hilarious, and there are definitely days when I wonder what on earth I’m doing.

But watching them grow into funny, kind, clever little humans is something I still can’t quite believe I get to do.

So Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, stepdads, grandads, and father figures out there.

Hope you all have a lovely day.

ā˜€ļø Summer starts today, so I’ve created a new Summer Study Partner offer at Learn BI Academy.

The idea is simple:

Enrol in one of the eligible courses and you can bring a friend, colleague, partner or team member with you for just $1 more.

You both get your own account.
You both get access to the course.
And you get someone to learn alongside.

That can make a big difference.

It gives you someone to compare notes with, discuss the projects with, and keep you accountable when life gets busy.

The offer is available on selected Learn BI Academy courses, including the BI Analyst Starter Program, Applied AI Systems for Business Intelligence, and the BI Consultant Masterclass.

See the offer here:

I think my latest video might be easy to misunderstand.

It’s called:

**I Built a Custom Data Studio Chart with AI. You Can Too.**

But the point is not really the chart.

And it is definitely not aimed only at developers.

The point is that, with AI, people who understand data, reporting and business problems can now build things they probably would not have attempted before.

In this case, I used ChatGPT to help me go from a simple BI idea to a working custom visualisation inside Data Studio.

I did not know the full technical path when I started.

ChatGPT helped me assess the idea, build a local prototype, migrate it into Data Studio, deploy the files, and refine the result.

I still had to provide the BI judgement.

What should the chart do?
What would make it useful?
What should be configurable?
What would make sense for the report user?

But AI guided a lot of the technical process.

That’s why I think this is such an important case study.

It shows what is becoming possible for BI analysts, consultants and data professionals who are not full-time developers.

I'd highly recommend you watch it because a) it isn't really all that technical and b) it might open your eyes to what's possible without needing much technical knowledge.

What would you like to build?
