There are more than 21,000 universities in the world.

Recently, the University of Calgary was ranked #203 globally in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

At first glance, #203 doesn’t feel like much. Just a number, really. But when you zoom out and see that 21,291 institutions were evaluated worldwide, it puts things in a different light—UCalgary is in the top 1% of universities globally.

For students figuring out where they want to go next, rankings are interesting—but they’re definitely not the whole story. A lot of it comes down to things like program fit, hands-on learning, campus life, affordability, location, long-term value… and honestly, a feeling. The kind of place you can picture yourself in. A sense of community.

And still, every once in a while, a stat like this makes you pause and take it in a bit.

Because it reflects something bigger than a number—it reflects the people here. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, partners. A community that’s constantly building, learning, and pushing things forward together.

Sometimes a ranking is just a ranking.
And sometimes it’s a reminder you’re part of something in the top 1% of universities in the world.
