The counting is almost over, and even if there are a few changes, they will be limited to only 2 or 3 seats. Apart from that, the results across all the states are nearly final, and it is now almost confirmed which parties are set to form the government in most places.
Tamil Nadu, however, remains the only state with suspense, as no party has crossed the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly. With the state still hanging in balance, all eyes are now on Tamil Nadu to see who finally forms the government and becomes the next Chief Minister.
Rare photographs of Sam Manekshaw, one of India’s greatest military leaders.
Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, popularly known as “Sam Bahadur”, was the first officer of the Indian Army to be promoted to the prestigious five-star rank of Field Marshal.
As the 8th Chief of the Army Staff, he led India to a historic victory in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. Under his leadership, the war ended in just 13 days with the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers, marking the largest military surrender since World War II.
For his exceptional service to the nation, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan (1968) and the Padma Vibhushan (1972).
Jawaharlal Nehru and other Congress leaders voting on the acceptance of the Partition Plan in June 1947. Indira Gandhi, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and Govind Ballabh Pant can also be seen in the background.
Mahatma Gandhi was not a formal participant in this vote. While he personally opposed the idea of dividing India, he eventually did not block the Congress leadership from accepting the partition, considering the worsening communal tensions and the risk of large-scale civil conflict.
Congress leaders — including Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and others — reluctantly agreed to the partition as part of the 3 June 1947 Plan, viewing it as the only practical solution to prevent further violence.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on 14 June 1947 in Delhi, where Congress formally approved the plan for the partition of British India.
Both Nehru and Gandhi initially preferred a united India, but by mid-1947, the escalating unrest and political deadlock with the Muslim League pushed the Congress leadership toward reluctantly accepting the partition for the stability of the new nation.
