« In 1998, Roman Coppola, the director of the « Foxxy » music video, pitched us an idea that immediately excited us: a bank heist in the suburbs of Los Angeles, a single-shot sequence lasting the entire song, filmed by nine cameras positioned like surveillance footage. The image on the screen was then supposed to be split into nine frames, each showing a different camera and the scene it had captured.
Both Philippe and I were on set, and we were like kids, amazed by the production scale and the professionalism of the massive crew working on it: different extras for each scene, different sets, equipment everywhere… a three-minute American film. »

L’image sur l’écran devait ensuite être séparée en neuf cases, avec chaque caméra et la scène qu’elle avait filmée.
Nous étions tous les deux avec Philippe sur le tournage et avons été comme des gamins devant les moyens mis en œuvre pour le tournage et le professionnalisme de l’équipe gigantesque qui y travaillait : des figurants différents pour chaque scène, des décors différents, du matériel partout… un film américain de trois minutes. » - Boombass

To celebrate the release of the album « 1999 DJ Tool » on March 21st, we’ve remastered the original music videos in HD. The 1999 video is now available on YouTube!

« We were in the middle of recording our first album when Alexandre Courtès showed up at the studio with ideas and some scans made with the Photoshop equivalent of that era.
‘Martin Fougerol and I want to make a music video, you in?’ he asked us, all fired up. We said ‘OK’ right away, and he chose 1999, one of the only tracks that was nearly finished.
Six months later, watching the video in the editing room, it became clear to us that the video outshined the song. On a whim, we remade 1999 in a single day. The song became a ‘hit’, and the video was played on all the music channels of the time.

« Nous sommes en plein enregistrement de notre premier album quand Alexandre Courtès débarque au studio avec des idées et des scans faits avec le Photoshop de l’époque.
”Avec Martin Fougerol, on vous fait un clip, ça vous branche ?” nous demande-t-il, les cheveux hirsutes. On dit ”OK” direct, et il part avec 1999, un des seuls morceaux quasiment terminés.
Six mois plus tard, en visionnant la vidéo dans la salle de montage, il nous semble évident que le clip est plus fort que la chanson. On la remplace sur un coup de tête en faisant 1999 en une journée. La chanson devient un ”tube”, et la vidéo passe sur toutes les chaînes musicales de l’époque.

Au moment où Stéphane Sednaoui déclenche l’obturateur de son appareil photo, nous sommes en 1999, et ni Philippe ni moi ne savons qu’une longue aventure, celle de Cassius, allait rythmer notre vie pendant les 25 années à venir.
La plupart de ces photos n’avaient jamais été publiées, mais elles trouvent enfin leur place aujourd’hui, dans le vinyle de notre Best Of 1996-2019, qui sortira ce vendredi 11 octobre.

At the moment Stéphane Sednaoui presses the shutter on his camera, it’s 1999, and neither Philippe nor I know that a long adventure called Cassius was about to shape our lives for the next 25 years.
Most of these photos had never been published before, but they finally find their place today in the vinyl of our Best Of 1996-2019, which will be released this Friday, October 11.

October 9th at the Rex Club.
With very special guests…

The first time Philippe and I played at the Rex, we were sharing the lineup with Daft Punk. The album 1999 didn’t have a name yet, nor any record labels. But by the end of the night, the boss of Virgin Records, exhausted, pulled us aside to tell us in his own way that we had found a home for Cassius. So celebrating our journey this year in this legendary club seemed like the obvious choice.

La première fois que Philippe et moi avons joué au Rex, nous partagions l’affiche avec les Daft Punk. L’album 1999 n’avait pas encore de nom, ni de maison de disques. Mais une fois arrivée la fin de la nuit, le boss de Virgin Records, mort de fatigue, nous a pris dans un coin pour nous dire à sa manière que nous avions trouvé un toit pour Cassius. Alors célébrer notre aventure cette année dans ce club mythique me semblait être une évidence.

Twenty-five years ago, the 1999 album rolled off the Virgin Records pressing factory floor to find its spot on the CD and Vinyl shelves of record stores. Recorded in Paris, in the eighteenth arrondissement, 1999 catapulted us into a grand adventure. Friendship, encounters, experiences, and music rubbed shoulders with success, disappointments, miracles, and catastrophes. Everything that makes up a musician's life. I thank this life for putting Philippe on my path, and, on our behalf, extend gratitude to all those who have listened to us, continue to listen, or will listen to us someday. Happy Birthday, 1999.
