MAY 14, 2024... JACK CARR published RED SKY MOURNING. This is Jack's 7th novel featuring former Navy SEAL turned CIA operative James Reece. This one is a clear tribute to 007 and THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER.

Remembering POWERS BOOTHE today as we mark nine years since his passing on May 14, 2017. Powers had some great performances in some iconic movies such as SOUTHERN COMFORT, RED DAWN and TOMBSTONE to name just a few.
Rest in Peace, Powers. Thanks for the magic and memories.

A little Christmas in May from Dolly's Bookstore in Park City, Utah. Just received my copy of THE FOURTH OPTION by JACK CARR & M.P. WOODWARD. On the back cover in small print, I found a little Easter egg. It's a phone number, 757-280-4512. This is going to be great!

I picked up this first printing paperback copy of FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE by ALISTAIR MacLEAN last week while visiting Charleston, South Carolina. I found it at BLUE BICYCLE BOOKS. I love the artwork on the front cover featuring Mallory and Miller in dive suits while searchlights are scanning the water and bombers are flying overhead.
This particular copy is from Fawcett Crest, 1968. The hardcover was published in 1968 by Collins in the UK and Doubleday in the US. This one is a sequel to THE GUNS OF NAVARONE which was published in 1957. A film adaption for FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE was released in 1978 and starred ROBERT SHAW, HARRISON FORD, BARBARA BACH, EDWARD FOX and CARL WEATHERS among others.

If you're looking for a great non-fiction read for the summer, let me recommend this biography of JACQUES COUSTEAU by BRAD MATSEN that was published in 2009. If you grew up in the 60's or 70's, there's a good chance that you watched a few episodes of THE UNDERSEA WORLD OF JACQUES COUSTEAU as a kid. Maybe you were even a member of the Cousteau Society for young explorers. I always looked forward to his weekly sea adventures around the globe.
Cousteau had an interesting life for certain. He was a French military naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker, conservationist, author and inventor among other things. Cousteau invented the first successful open-circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA), called the Aqua-Lung, which assisted him in producing some of the first underwater documentaries.
The author, BRAD MATSEN, did an excellent job in giving a complete picture of Cousteau in both his successes and failures. Prior to his career as a writer, Matsen served as a Devil Dog in the U.S. Marine Corps.

If you're a Jack Carr fan, here's a head's up from the desk of the ACTIONbrary. As you may know, Jack has been doing special limited shot-thru editions for books in the TERMINAL LIST universe for a while now. Well, for this new series THE FOURTH OPTION, Jack just released something a little different... a four set signed bookplate sticker series. There are four options (all pun intended) to choose from. The one that I ordered is shown below and is titled "Stay on Target". I don't plan to actually apply the stickers but I'll keep them in in the black envelope with the cross axes with the book, I much prefer to have the book itself signed in person. The other three sets are titled "Beware of Dog" featuring a Belgian Malinois K9, "All Roads Lead to a Reckoning" featuring the Off-Grid VW Popup camper and "Justice is Coming" featuring the black knight chess piece.
These are a limited run and I'd expect them to sell out the same as the shot-thru editions usually do. If you're interested in getting one, go over to @JackCarrUSA where you can find a link to an independent bookseller. Jack has divided the four designs between different independent booksellers. You can also pre-order signed copies of the books without the nameplate sets.
THE FOURTH OPTION will be published on May 12, 2026.

Sadly, here at the ACTIONbrary, we have learned that JAMES TOLKAN has died at the age of 94. James had a film and stage career that spanned 5 decades including performances in the BACK TO THE FUTURE franchise, SERPICO, HILL STREET BLUES and MIAMI VICE to name a few. For me personally though, Tolkan will always be STINGER, the Commanding Officer of MAVERICK and GOOSE, in TOP GUN.
Rest in Peace, James, thanks for the magic and memories. TOP GUN was such an important part of my life in 1986 that I hate to see anyone from that movie pass away. Sadly, STINGER (James Tolkan) has now left the flight deck, along with ICEMAN (Val Kilmer) and SUNDOWN (Clarence Gilyard Jr).
