In which country will you find this famous prehistoric monument?
Englandβ
Built in several stages from around 3000 BC to 1500 BC, the ring of standing stones is located on Salisbury Plain in the county of Wiltshire in South West England. There are several theories as to why Stonehenge was built, but it remains one of the great mysteries of archaeology. Each year, thousands of revellers descend on the Neolithic monument to greet the start of the longest day of the year, as Stonehenge is aligned in the direction of the sunrise of the summer solstice and the sunset of the winter solstice. On the longest day of the year, the sun rises behind the Heel Stone, the ancient entrance to the stone circle, and rays of sunlight are channelled into the centre of the monument. The Heel Stone is the largest of the sarsen stones, weighing about 30 tonnes.
