Last Minute Tips for UPSC Prelims Exam

Most important thing on exam day is not how many years you studied. It is clarity, calmness and presence of mind.

Around 35-40 questions can be solved by common sense, elimination and a relaxed mind only.

Before Exam Day

👉 Sleep for at least 6 hours. Lack of sleep reduces clarity and increases silly mistakes.

👉 Don’t study after 7 PM. Over-studying makes the mind numb next day.

👉 More than knowledge, clarity of mind matters on exam day.

👉 Eat a light breakfast in the morning.

👉 Stay hydrated. You can take ORS/Health OK/electrolyte drink before exam.

👉 Don’t overhydrate. Too much water may create stress due to washroom breaks.

👉 During CSAT break, don’t discuss GS paper. Eat light, sit calmly in shade and relax your brain.

GS Paper Strategy

👉 Solve questions in one go on question paper itself. Avoid multiple rounds as paper will be lengthy and 1 round itself will take 1.5 hours.

👉 Label questions as:
1 = Sure
2 = Mostly Sure/ 2 Options eliminated
3 = Doubtful/ 1 option eliminated
4 = Very Doubtful
○ = Gut feeling / Hunch = Do it

👉 Paper will feel lengthy. Target:
* Around 60 questions in first 1 hour
* Entire paper scan by 1.5 hours

👉 Start with subjects you are strong in. Do 20-25 comfortable questions first to build rhythm and confidence.

👉 At 11 AM (1.5hours) start filling OMR no matter what.

👉 Fill all 1, 2 and Gut/Hunch questions directly from question paper markings. Do not rethink them again. Usually around 70-75 questions.

👉 In last 15 minutes, review only Type 3 and Type 4 questions.

👉 Avoid overly confusing questions where:
* No elimination works
* No common sense works
* No gut feeling supports an option

👉 Good attempt:
85-90 questions (+/- 2)

CSAT Strategy

👉 Do CSAT in 3 steps:

* Step 1: Mark doable Quant & Reasoning questions
* Step 2: Complete Comprehension + OMR filling
* Step 3: Finish Quant/Reasoning + OMR

👉 In first 5-10 minutes, identify questions you will attempt in Quant & Reasoning. Usually 15-25 questions depending on aptitude.

👉 If Quant is your strength and you can finish it within first hour, do it first.

👉 Otherwise, after Step 1, finish comprehension within 1 hour and mark OMR.

👉 Then solve Quant/Reasoning while marking OMR side by side.

👉 Accuracy matters most in Quant & Reasoning. Only mark when exact answer is coming.

👉 In Comprehension, intelligent guessing can work if:
* 2 options are eliminated
* One option feels more probable

👉 40 correct attempts with good accuracy are enough. Don’t force extra attempts without confidence.

👉 CSAT may be slightly easier this year, but never depend on rumours.

Stay calm. Trust your preparation. One good day can change your life.

All the best.
