So the audio crackling issues have made a return. The "fix" i found was to increase the audio quality as high as it will go in OBS. This helped in that it made the crackling more rare, but it still happens occasionally. After a bit of digging through the OBS forum and github i found out that it's apparently an issue with Windows, and it should be fixed in the 24H2 update for Windows 11. The downside is that update isn't going to be out until autumn.
Heyo! Just post to explain the status of my videos and the philosophy/idea behind them.
Pod Solos Every Dungeon In WoW is on hiatus until i feel like doing it again.
MoP Timerunning will continue at some point. I feel the FOMO rising!
Pod Completes Every Zone In WoW will continue soon. I have the beginning of Nagrand (Horde) uploaded and waiting to be set to public, however there were some audio issues that i could not fix.
Pod Completes Final Fantasy XIV MSQ is going to last a very long time, since FFXIV is a very long game. --------------------
So.. those audio issues. I used Nvidia Shadowplay for my early videos, and have been using it for years, but i'm unhappy with the quality. Even with the bitrate whacked up super high it still isn't high enough quality for me, and youtube compression ruins it further. Starting with Ghostlands Part 9 i switched to OBS because OBS lets me output to 4k even though my monitor is only 1080p, which allows me to upload to youtube in very good quality.
This resulted in issues that i am still battling a month and dozens of videos later. The first issue i had with OBS was the audio was echoing, and it took me a long time to notice. Once i got that fixed i thought everything was fine, but eventually i noticed periods of crackling in the audio. I still don't know whats causing that or how to fix it, and its REALLY BAD in the first 4 Nagrand videos. Sadly there's not much i can do to fix it in those videos, but i'm trying my best to find a fix for it in future videos. But because I record so far in advance, it's going to be a while before you see the fix, assuming i can fix it at all that is.
For FFXIV i am using Shadowplay again because for some ungodly reason OBS refuses to record that game. However starting with Part 12 i will be recording in 4k. I was able to do this because FFXIV is optimized well enough that all i had to do was set my in game resolution to 3840x2160 and boom, 4k recording with Shadowplay. I can't do this in WoW because WoW is horribly optimized.
I have a Ryzen 5 7600 cpu, 32gb ddr5 ram, and a RTX 3070, so a solid midrange pc. WoWs graphics are not any better than FFXIV from a technical standpoint as far as I can tell. Polygon counts and texture resolutions appear roughly the same in both games, and FFXIV actually has higher draw distance than WoW, but i do think WoW has better lighting. Point is, with everything in consideration, the graphics are very similar from a technical standpoint, although i will admit i GREATLY prefer WoWs art style.
So why is it that at 1080p i get a solid 144fps (my monitors refresh rate) in FFXIV, but i often dip below 60fps in WoW, at least in the newer zones? No idea, i'm not a game developer, but my guess is that the WoWs devs haven't put as much effort into keeping the engine updated and optimized as the FFXIV devs did. It sucks and its probably the worst thing about WoW at the moment, but oh well. WoWs engine was created in like.. 1999. And it shows. --------------------
The idea behind these videos is that i want them to be as close to the experience of actually playing the games as possible. This is why, apart from lack of privacy, there is no commentary. That is also one of the reasons why there is minimal editing. I originally began doing this so my mom could experience WoW and now FFXIV even though she's not much of a gamer herself anymore.
I'm thrilled that there's a few people that have discovered these videos and enjoy them as well. A few of my vids have several hundred views which is insane! I think thats awesome, and makes me want to continue and to improve the quality even more! --------------------
TLDR:
The solo dungeon vids are on hiatus. WoW zone vids will continue soon. MoP Timerunning will continue eventually. I am aware of the audio issues in the WoW vids and i'm trying to fix them, but it might take a while. FFXIV vids will be higher quality starting in Part 12. FFXIV runs way better than WoW.
At least one of the MoP Timerunning videos has a few seconds of weird crackly audio. Sorry about that! I think i figured it out and it should be fixed in future uploads.
Also, in my "Pod Completes Every Zone In WoW" videos that are coming up, there was another audio issue where everything was echoing. This issue affects Ghostlands Part 9 and 10 and Hellfire Peninsula Part 1-6. After that it's fixed though.
One final note, The MoP Timerunning series is going to count as completing every MoP zone on alliance side. Might make a horde alt and do the same if the limited time event FOMO isn't too strong. If it is, then I can do it on retail.
I've been a busy Pod! Huge bunch of Mists of Pandaria Timerunning videos coming as soon as i can get them uploaded! The limiting factor here is my 10mbps upload speed π€£
I'm still doing the dungeon solo vids btw! The zone ones are just kinda a side thing i'm doing to mix it up a little. As i'm sure you've seen i went back and did the TBC heroic only bosses, and Yor required a rep grind to unlock. There's a couple in WoTLK i need to do, then i can do Cata for realsies :3

I have one more trick left up my sleeve though :)

The audio issues in the Nagrand vids were so awful i'm redoing it. Thankfully it seems like i found a fix for them, so we should be good eventually.
