🚨 Medication Alert: Clarithromycin + Atorvastatin = Risky Combo! 🚨
If you're taking atorvastatin to manage your cholesterol and your doctor prescribes clarithromycin (an antibiotic), be cautious! ⚠️
🔬 What's the issue?
Clarithromycin inhibits the liver enzyme CYP3A4, which is crucial for breaking down atorvastatin. When this enzyme is blocked, atorvastatin levels can build up dangerously in your system.
📈 What could happen?
Elevated levels of atorvastatin increase the risk of: • Muscle pain or weakness (Myopathy)
• Rhabdomyolysis – a rare but serious condition that can lead to kidney damage or failure 🧬💔
🩺 What should you do?
✔️ Avoid using both drugs together if possible
✔️ If necessary, your healthcare provider may:
▪️ Reduce the atorvastatin dose
▪️ Temporarily stop atorvastatin while you're on clarithromycin
▪️ Switch to a safer combo like azithromycin or a statin not heavily metabolized by CYP3A4 (e.g., pravastatin or rosuvastatin)
📣 Always check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing medications!
