SPOILERS FOR KANA 5 Just some of my very honest thoughts on the event:
Not gonna lie, I expected a lot more from this event purely because of all the details they've been revealing since the trailer. The music sounds dark and brooding, the mirrors and the paintings seem to refer to Kanade's childhood memories, and the design of the cards are very max-saturation/mizu5/world-is-about-to-end vibes. All of this was pointing towards Kanade having a moment like Mafuyu did in 'Saying Goodbye to My Masked Self' where she has finally had enough of all the physical and emotional turmoil that comes with binding herself to such a strenuous goal. She has no end in sight, no breaks, no way out of it. Her guilt-borne saviour complex eventually will consume her. Worst of all, she really has no-one to rely on and this particular event makes it seem even more so.
Originally, when Mafuyu ran away to live with Kanade, I thought that her existence would be like Honami where she can get Kanade to take breaks, look after herself, reassure her that she's on the right path, etc. However, after reading the event, I think it's safe to say Mafuyu only serves to add more pressure to her. She serves as a perpetual reminder of what Kanade has to achieve to 'redeem herself' and despite all of the efforts put into creating songs for Mafuyu, Kanade will never be able to get a response from her past 'I don't know' or 'it's warm'. In Kanade's interactions with Leo/Need (excluding Shiho), Honami takes care of her and finds ways to help her relax, Ichika looks up to her as a composer and complements her music, Saki describes her as '眩しい', 'dazzling', and that is exactly what she is. Her drive and her passion for music is so, so beautiful and it is through this kind of confirmation that she is able to realise this. When she interacts with basically anyone but Mafuyu, she is constantly being re-assured that what she does is meaningful and she flourishes in this environment. With Mafuyu, all she can think about is how she's not good enough and how she can do more. It's not healthy for her, and Mafuyu isn't in a position where she can realise this either. I know it isn't her fault, but even if they just added ANY sort of segment where, when Kanade faints in the event (for the second time in the story, I think), Mafuyu displays to her a warmth that she doesn't display to anyone else. I know Mafuyu did try to cook for her, but I think it would be a lot more powerful if we got to see a bit more of her soft side, how taking care of Kanade reawakens the 'nurse' in her. As things stand now, there is absolutely nothing Mafuyu can offer Kanade in return other than giving her more stress, and it shouldn't have to be this way. Mafuyu's already shown herself as somebody with a caring nature and she IS getting better at showing her emotions...it just kind of pains me that this state is what they've both been reduced to...
Also, it might just be me who thinks this, I don't know, but WHAT WAS SEGA THINKING shoving a 'parental love story' and a supposed 'mother figure' ON SOMEBODY WHOSE PARENTS ARE IN THE STATE THAT THEY ARE?! LOOK AT HER, LOOK AT HOW SHATTERED HER FAMILY IS, AND YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU WANT THIS POOR LITTLE CHILD TO BE ABLE TO EXPRESS AND FEEL THE MOTHERLY LOVE OF SOMEBODY WHO HAS ONLY EVER GASLIGHTED HER?! YOU'RE TELLING ME SHE'S SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHING MAFUYU RECONCILE WITH HER FAMILY WHEN HER OWN FATHER IN HOSPITAL UNABLE TO REMEMBER HER AND HER MOTHER IS DEAD?! WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THAT AND CELEBRATING MOTHERS' DAY AT AN ORPHANAGE?! WHAT IN THE HATSUNE MIKU WERE YOU THINKING SEGA??? WHY DO THIS TO MY POOR SWEET SUMMER CHILD???
All of this just makes me even more worried for Kanade's future; whether she can properly make peace with her past and figure out what music truly means for her, or if she can become someone who can live without a saviour complex. Before, her goal was to save anyone, if her music could reach even one person, she'd be happy. Now, all her energy is spent trying to resolve Mafuyu's issues to the point where I'm worried if Mafuyu one day really does go back to her family and finds herself, what will Kanade do then? She's bound herself to Mafuyu so entirely that I'm doubtful she can find any other purpose for herself. Why can't SEGA just give us an event where Kanade's father, in his state of jumbled memory, says something like Kanamum where he tells the Kanade that he doesn't know is his daughter that if they ever had a daughter, they'd want her to be happy and live her own life, and maybe that can help Kanade overcome her guilt and her obsession. Kana4 was really a step in the right direction, but now...it only feels like she's regressed...
