HellMarch - Mass Combat is a streamlined set of rules for use with most Fantasy RPGs, including the award winning ShadowDark RPG, EZD6, Castles & Crusades, and many more!

50 years ago, Chainmail introduced rules for seamless heroic and mass combat. At the time, those mass combat rules were poorly understood, and promptly ignored and left behind. But take note: Heroic and Mass Combat were never meant to be separate "ways to play". Mass & heroic combat play out at the same time!

Combined Heroic and Mass Combat

These mass combat rules are designed to be used together with your existing TTRPG combat rules: one round your Warrior player may use these rules to cut through a goblin horde, and the next round they’ll challenge the boss using your existing TTRPG combat rules, while the mass combat continues on around them.

Standard TTRPG combat rules are generally designed for “heroic” combat. That is combat where the player characters are able to take the spotlight, and their choices as individuals matter the most. To complement this, HellMarch’s Mass Combat is for clashes between units of troops, or for when powerful characters stand against units of troops.

What’s Mass Combat Like?

Units of troops behave differently than heroes and fantastic monsters, and HellMarch takes this into account. Mass combat moves quickly, as units are given orders as a whole and resolve their attacks with big rolls of hit dice. Melee combats also resolve quickly, as most troops are not keen on fighting to the death. Melee’s tend to last only one or two rounds before morale breaks, and one side or the other is pushed back in defeat.

HellMarch’s “Indoor Combat” rules are designed for seamless use with Theater of the Mind play - it is possible to run battles with dozens of troops on each side, in addition to the player characters themselves, without needing a battle grid. Meanwhile, HellMarch’s “Outdoor Combat” rules adds the remainder of the crunch for managing large unit formations, cavalry, indirect fire, and so on.

For TTRPG Players and Game Masters

HellMarch - Mass Combat assumes you come from a fantasy RPG background, not a wargaming background. HellMarch is first and foremost for use in TTRPG play, by modern players. The final third of the book is a chapter dedicated to advice for Game Masters, explaining why the rules the way they are, like why only the front two ranks of archers can normally fire (the first rank kneels, and second rank stands!). Other details are also provided, like how many troops a village or stronghold would have available, what is the command structure of an army, and other details that help integrate your players' armies into your campaign world.

About the Author

The author of HellMarch has established experience with Chainmail, and has designed a freely available retroclone of it titled “The Old Lords of Wonder and Ruin”, also available here on DTRPG. These HellMarch rules are the result of the deeper understanding gained during the writing of The Old Lords, heavily streamlining the rules for modern players, while maintaining the core magic that allows for the seamless combination of heroic and mass combat.
