A Portuguesa
The current National Anthem of Portugal was composed in record time right before the Portuguese revolt of January 31st, 1891, by Alfredo Keil and lyrics by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça.

Today, it is one of Portugal’s national symbols. The song itself was born as a patriotic song in response to the British ultimatum to abandon the Portuguese positions in Africa. The territory in question was the area between the colonies of Mozambique and Angola, included in the famous “Pink Map”

The Sounds of Portuguese

Today is Our Lady of Fátima's Day. You don’t need to be Catholic or even religious at all to appreciate why Our Lady of Fátima matters in Portugal.

For many Portuguese people, Fátima is deeply connected to faith. But beyond religion, it is also a major cultural and historical moment that helped shape modern Portuguese identity.

Its influence can still be felt today: in public holidays, local traditions, family life, place names, pilgrimages, and everyday conversation.

If you’ve chosen to live in Portugal, or you’re learning Portuguese because you love the country and its culture, understanding moments like this helps you understand the people more deeply, too.

You don’t have to believe in the event itself, but knowing why it matters to millions of Portuguese people is part of understanding Portugal. And really, language learning is always richer when we learn the culture alongside the words.

The Sounds of Portuguese

Olá! If you live in the Algarve and, in particular, the East Algarve, watch out for these tomorrow. They are called Maios; they are handmade, close-to-life-size dolls that are placed on doorsteps, windowsills, or in public spaces throughout villages and towns. They are always accompanied by a poem containing irony or social criticism. The dolls are usually made with straw and old clothes.

You may start seeing them today, even!
