Do you know why the Maruti Dzire is India’s bestselling car in FY2026 (April 2025 to March 2026), registering total sales of 2.3 lakh units?
The Dzire’s continued success stems from its strong fundamentals: competitive pricing, high fuel efficiency, low cost of ownership, widespread service support and its consistent demand in both private and fleet segments.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that SUVs accounted for 66 percent of the overall passenger vehicle market during the same period. Despite the clear shift in consumer preference towards SUVs, the Dzire’s strong volumes highlight that demand for sedans remains relevant.
Maruti Suzuki also strengthened its position in the sedan space, with its segment share rising to 57.2 percent in FY26, up from 45.8 percent in FY2017. The Dzire played a key role in this growth and continues to support the brand’s multi-body-style strategy, even as the sedan segment gradually shrinks. Since its launch in 2008, it has surpassed 3 million cumulative sales in the Indian market.
Currently, the Dzire remains the only sedan in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio following the discontinuation of the Ciaz. While some Ciaz buyers are moving towards SUVs and MPVs, a section of customers continues to consider the Dzire, reinforcing its importance in the lineup.
The Maruti Dzire scored a 5-star safety rating in Bharat NCAP crash tests. It is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine that produces 82 HP and 112 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. For the CNG variant, the engine produces 69.75 HP and 101.8 Nm of torque.
What are your thoughts on the country’s highest-selling sedan?
We are driving the MG Majestor which is a heavily reworked version of the Gloster. It comes with a lot of off-road hardware, and the feature list is long too.
The Majestor is powered by a 2.0-litre twin turbo diesel engine making 215.5 PS and 478.5 Nm of torque. The SUV gets an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Compared to the Gloster, it gets newer interiors and exteriors. The Majestor will give direct competition to the Toyota Fortuner Legender.
Here’s a look at the top 25 cars sold in the month of March 2026.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire takes the top spot with 21,224 units (+37% YoY), proving sedans still have strong demand despite the SUV wave. Right behind, Tata’s power duo Punch and Nexon continue to dominate the compact SUV space.
SUVs still rule the charts with heavy hitters like Hyundai Creta and Maruti Brezza, while brands like Kia and Toyota show massive growth with the Sonet (+56%), Seltos (+69%) and Hyryder (+93%).
Maruti continues its volume game strong with Ertiga and Baleno, though Swift and Wagon R show signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, newer launches and facelifts are clearly making an impact, hinting at shifting buyer preferences.
Sedans holding ground, SUVs dominating and new launches shaking things up, the Indian car market is getting more interesting than ever!
The government has reduced excise duty by ₹10/litre on petrol and diesel. Central taxes now stand at ₹3/litre for petrol and zero for diesel.
However, the reduction may not lead to lower retail prices. Oil marketing companies are currently facing significant under-recoveries, estimated at ₹48.8 per litre, amid a sharp rise in crude oil prices. Brent crude has crossed $100 per barrel following geopolitical tensions and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.
As a result, the duty cut is expected to be absorbed by OMCs to offset losses rather than being passed on to consumers.

We are driving the Nissan Gravite Tekna MT Launch Edition which retails at Rs. 9.76 Lakh, OTR Mumbai.
This vehicle is powered by a 1.0-litre NA petrol engine making 72 PS and 96 Nm.
The launch edition comes with orange accents and JBL speakers which won’t be available on the regular trims.
Apart from that, the vehicle gets wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, stylised wheels, suede upholstery, ambient lighting, cooled storage box, etc.
The dashboard of the vehicle is the same as the pre-facelift Renault Triber.
The vehicle offers good space and practicality for its size. Even though it is very low on power, it scores high on the VFM front.
