The Whitby Photographer

Welcome to The Whitby Photographer.

This channel documents life in and around Whitby the North Yorkshire Moors, coast, sea, the weather, the people, and the moments that quietly matter.

You’ll find storm footage, snow, tides, fishing boats, coastal drives, village life, and the occasional unexpected story that turns up when a camera is left to observe rather than interfere. Nothing is staged, exaggerated, or forced.

I’m a Whitby-based photographer - videographer, filming the town and surrounding countryside as it actually is. Some videos are calm, some are wild, others quietly funny.

Many films are narrated by Gary Bender, offering commentary, perspective, and the occasional raised eyebrow at modern life. Others are left to breathe with natural sound and atmosphere.

If you enjoy honest storytelling, strong visuals, and films that feel real you’re in the right place.

New videos added regularly. Thanks for watching and supporting independent local filmmaking.

Whitby Shop Occupancy.

How many empty shops are there really in Whitby?

According to social media, the town centre is either thriving, dying, booming, collapsing, packed with tourists, completely empty, or all of those things at the same time.

So rather than argue about it, I grabbed the DJI Pocket 3 and went for a walk around Whitby's main shopping streets to find out.

In this video we count occupied shops, empty shops, businesses opening soon and units under refurbishment. From Skinner Street to Church Street, Flowergate to Baxtergate, we attempt to answer a simple question:

How many shops in Whitby are actually empty?

The results may surprise a few people.

As always, narrated by Gary Bender, with Glenn doing the walking, counting and questionable arithmetic.

Wed 20th May 2026. The sun peeping through the cloud as it makes its first decent into the sea for 2026. Photo taken from the top of The Spa Drive after coffee at Neil Trillos Full Of Beans on Khyber Pass.

From the Abbey plane this sight would have been visible a couple of days earlier, however the weather did not allow us to take the shot this summer.

A few people seemed slightly reluctant to buy a 50 megapixel digital download for £1.

Now unless my mathematics has completely failed me, that means for one single pound you now own a massive high resolution image capable of printing pin sharp all the way up to A0 size.

So just for example’s sake…

If you took that file to somewhere like a canvas printer and ordered an A1 canvas, you’d currently pay around £19.99 for the print.

That means your total cost for a huge A1 canvas on your wall would be roughly £20.99.

Now it hasn’t escaped my attention that many A1 canvases on the High Street currently retail at well over £120.

So even with my famously questionable maths skills, it would appear you’ve just saved yourself around £100.

Even at the normal full price of £50 for one of my premium downloads, you could still get an enormous A1 canvas to your door for around £69.99 total, which is still dramatically cheaper than many High Street galleries.

And unlike many generic coastal prints, you’re also getting something far more unique than the same iconic view photographed by every man and his dog since 1987.

These are proper high resolution master files. Not blurry Facebook screenshots. Not tiny web images. Proper printable photographs.
