Equality for all!!!

Ensuring equitable access to wheelchairs for all Australians is crucial for fostering a truly inclusive society.  Wheelchair access isn't merely about mobility; it's about participation in education, employment, social activities, and community life.  Denying this fundamental need perpetuates inequality and limits opportunities for personal growth and economic independence.  A society that values equality must prioritize accessible healthcare and assistive devices, ensuring that socioeconomic status doesn't determine access to essential tools for full participation in life.  Providing accessible wheelchairs to those in need is an investment in a more just and equitable Australia.

Michael Wolff, a famous Jazz musician, composer and producer, has lived with Tourette Syndrome since he was a child.  Growing up with a mild case of TS, he made a conscious effort to hide his vocal and motor tics, which luckily never interfered with his successful school career or social life. Wolff never really knew he had TS until he was officially diagnosed in his thirties.

James Michael Eisenreich

-In 1982 Jim Eisenreich was drafted to the Minnesota Twins. Unfortunately, his Tourette’s worsened with age.  As a result, Eisenreich was taunted by fans and removed himself from games due to violent shaking and the inability to breathe.  In 1984-1987 Eisenreich retired voluntarily to undergo treatment for the disease.  He returned to professional baseball in 1987 signing with the Kansas City Royals going on to win the Tony Conigliaro award in 1990.  Eisenreich’s baseball career lasted 15 years including a World Series championship with the Florida Marlins in 1997.

Tim Howard

Already conscious of his own inability to concentrate or sit still, Howard's own tics started to emerge when he was 10 years old. At first his compulsions were limited to touching inanimate objects but soon progressed to physical tics, including shoulder shrugging, hard blinking and eye-rolling.

The US soccer star explains how he overcame the stigma of Tourette syndrome tics to become one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Few people understand the stigma of Tourette's syndrome (TS) as well as Tim Howard, whose condition was mocked by the English press when the American goalkeeper first moved overseas to play for professional club Manchester United in 2003. A longtime stalwart for the U.S. World Cup soccer team who now plays with pro club Everton, Howard was often called "retarded" by British tabloids because of his TS.

Today, Howard brushes off those slights as "ignorance" on the part of people trying to sell newspapers. But those headlines were not the only way Howard's condition was remarked on publicly. English fans traditionally make up songs about players on the field. While Howard's nationality is frequently targeted in the songs about him, so is his TS. In fact, Howard's own fans at Manchester United concluded their chant about Tim—sung to the tune of "Chim, Chim, Cher-ee" from Mary Poppins—with the chorus, "Tim, Tim, Timery ... says F-you!"

While Howard is able to laugh off the songs—even going so far as to call the Manchester chant a "warm embrace" of his condition—they exemplify both the stigma TS can entail and the misunderstanding that many people have about the symptoms.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Famous Classical composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, battled Tourette Syndrome. In the documentary, What Makes Mozart Tic?, James McConnel suggests that the musical genius’ compositions were influenced by TS. According to McConnel, Mozart displayed signs of twitching and obsessive nature, all signs of the disorder. Over the years, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has composed over 600 pieces and is truly known as one of the world’s best classical composers.

Dash Mihok is known from HBO’s drama Ray Donovan. He has also been in The Thin Red Line, Silver Linings Playbook, Romeo + Juliet (the DiCaprio version) and the Day After
Tomorrow.

Mihok has said TS is “the greatest itch you’ve ever had, time 5000”. He is a national ambassador for the Tourette Association of America, a truly fabulous US organization.

Over the course of his life, Mihok has experienced the full range of typical symptoms, including blinking, grimacing, head jerks, and shoulder shrugs—as well as actions that may appear purposeful, such as jumping, sniffing objects, or touching them. He’s had vocal tics like grunting, barking, throat clearing, saying words or phrases, and sometimes repeating others’ words.
