Hope you're having a great weekend ☀
I wanted to share a message I sent to my parenting newsletter about getting children to clean up without nagging ...
Let's say your 4-year-old is asking to go to the park 🌳
And you already told them you'd take them at some point in the day.
But first ... you want them to clean up their toys strewn across the room 🧸
That's when I may use what I call the as soon as method ⭐️
With this method I think it's all about how you position the choice.
So instead of saying ...
👉 We won't go to the park until you clean up.
I may say something like ...
👉 Of course we can go to the park ... as soon as you've put your toys away.
See the difference?
I believe the first can put a child into defence-mode.
Whereas the second option from my perspective feels less challenging.
Just simply matter of fact 🤷♀️

Are you tired of getting one-word answers from your child?
Here's how I may approach this ...
Let's say you're picking your child up from summer camp or a friend's house 🏠
And when you ask them how their day was ...
You're met with a one-word answer 👀
Here's what I've noticed about this ⬇️
Children usually don't rehash everything the second they get in the car 🚘
From my experience they often just want to decompress a little 🤷♀️
Without the pressure of sharing a play-by-play of the entire day.
Which is why I believe it's typically about letting it happen organically.
Because from what I've seen if you're a safe space for them to land ...
And you listen to understand and show empathy 💛
They tend to open up to you on their own terms.
Not during these interrogations or big talks you're trying to have ...
But rather in the small moments when you're connecting anyway.
Like when you're cooking dinner with them 🥘
Or taking the dog out for a walk together 🐶
