As an international student at Donghua University, I’ve been exploring different areas of communication—and fashion design has truly captured my curiosity! Under the guidance of Professor Tang Chengkun, I discovered Luoji Cross-stitch, a 300-year-old heritage craft from Shanghai. Classroom learning was only the starting point; I also delved into stitching techniques from the Maroon community in Suriname.

This April, the Shanghai International Flower Festival provides a wonderful opportunity for me to bring Luoji Cross-stitch to a wider community. As one of the first projects recognized as Shanghai’s municipal-level intangible cultural heritage, Luojing Cross-stitch combines simple structure with elegant colors, reflecting the city’s local cultural identity and inclusive spirit. Passed down through generations, this craft continues to thrive while maintaining its unique aesthetic value.

In recent years, the craft has evolved through innovation. Since 2019, Professor Tang has led long-term collaboration between Donghua University and Luojing Town in Baoshan District, Shanghai. Through the program “Intangible Cultural Heritage Entering Campus,” the craft has been brought to campus through courses, workshops, student innovation projects, and heritage promotion activities, inspiring young people and expanding its reach both domestically and internationally.

For me, this is an ongoing journey, exploring how Chinese stitching culture can connect with Surinamese traditions. It’s incredible to see how heritage and creativity come together across continents!
