DuYe means dance in the West African language of Ewe. This community arts service initiative of Chikaba’s Sanctuary, named in honor of Sister Teresa Juliana of Santo Domingo. Born free in 1676 into the Ewe tribe in La Mina Baja del Oro, the Gold Coast, between the ages of 6-7 Chikaba was abducted into slavery; taken first to Portugal then to Spain where she was owned by the marchioness Juliana Teresa Portocarrero y Meneses. Carrying within her the profound spirituality of her people, she was given the opportunity of literacy and education. Upon her owner’s death she was granted her freedom and a dowry, which she used to fund joining the convent where she lived in service to disenfranchised people of her community.
